National Volunteer Week 2016

This week is National Volunteer Week 2016, from April 10 – 16.    With it falling during National Letter Writing Month this is a great opportunity to combine the two – our letter writing and volunteer.

There are two organizations that come to mind that would welcome receiving a few letters to send to their programs:  Operation Gratitude and Homefront Hugs USA.

National Volunteer Week 2016

This annual event was started in 1989 in President George H.W. Bush inaugural address and is sponsored by the Points of Light.   There is a really nice Thank You! National Volunteer Week 2016 video by the Guiding Eyes for the Blind which was posted this week on April 11, 2016.

Operation Gratitude

LetterWritingFlyer-1OperationGratitudeOn their Write Letters page it shares how they send 500,000 + letters a year!  There is a very detailed Frequently Asked Questions section including best ways for the Salutation, suggested length, to not put into separate envelopes, that you can specify for Veterans, Wounded Warriors, New Recruits, to not fold your letter, and so on.

“Our troops tell us the most cherished items in the packages are the personal letters of appreciation.”

It is all summed up very nicely in this Writing Letter Flyer.

Homefront Hugs USA

Homefront Hugs USA was first featured here at AnchoredScraps.com just three months ago in January.  Their Writing our Troops page best explains how to send letters and cards to participate.

On their Operation Healing Angel page it is showing as of March 19, 2016 a multi-page flyer to support two VA hospitals especially their oncology units have some serious urgent needs as well on Operation Healing Angel Needs Spring 2016.

If you look over that list for Operation Healing Angel Needs Spring 2016 you may be surprised to see some of the items listed for new/gently used are items that you may already have around your home not being used, especially look over their list of DVDs and books they are trying to round up.

Here is a slide show on Homefront Hugs USA.

Perhaps you know someone in the volunteer organizations you support that would be wowed and surprised by a Thank You this week sent from you.   For those of you who are volunteers reading my blog post today please know you do make a difference and are appreciated!    Happy Wednesday!
