Stamp Out Hunger

It came in the mail today – the empty grocery bag (plastic this year) that my letter carrier delivered.  The nation’s largest food drive is this Saturday, May 09, 2015, the 23rd annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Letter Carriers Food drive.

The event is held each year on the second Saturday in May.  This is an ideal way to clean out your food pantry as we are being asked to leave non-perishable food at the mailbox this Saturday.  Photo shown today (upper left) was taken by me of my empty bag received today to fill up for Saturday’s ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive!

Their website states “Carriers will bring the food to local food banks, pantries or shelters, including many affiliated with Feeding America, which is a national partner in the drive, as are the U.S. Postal Service, United Way Worldwide, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, the AFL-CIO, Valpak and Valassis.”

In writing this blogpost today I am reminded that for several years I would participate in the CROP Hunger Walks with a close friend and her daughter raising money as we walked the 4.8 miles together on a Sunday afternoon with our team from Church starting at Duke University Chapel.  Those memories are recorded with their 35mm film photos included in my scrapbooks.

There are letters that can be written to make a difference in the battle of hunger.  In doing some preliminary looking around I came across two different sites encouraging sending emails to Congress to help with funding of programs in the battle for hunger and one of the sites was with a Food Bank.

How nice to be offered the opportunity to participate this Saturday thanks to our Letter Carriers and no postage required!
