Realizing your dream

Yesterday I was delighted to talk on the phone with a dear friend who has this past weekend gotten her first horse – her dream realized!   So when I read about this day in history celebrating Secretariat I knew Horses it is for today’s blogpost.   At this point I think you are wondering how is Helen going to tie this into letter writing?

First let’s talk about Secretariat

Today is the day, when on June 09, 1973 U.S.A. Secretariat became horse racing’s first Triple Crown Winner (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes ) by winning the Belmont Stakes!  Secretariat was named Horse of the Year in both 1972 and 1973. Following retirement from racing, he sired as many as 600 foals.    There was a Disney made movie, Secretariat (2010) which was a ‘biographical sports drama film’ with Diane Lane and John Malkovich.

(Photo shown upper left) 33c Secretariat wins Triple Crown. Date issued: 1999-11-18, 33 cents stamp, Commemorative issue “Celebrate the Century – 1970s” stamp.   There is an article about the selection process for getting picked for inclusion in the stamp series in this 1998 article: Secretariat Wins His Place on Postage Stamp.

And now about how to tie today’s blogpost to Letter Writing

The tweet from Horse Illustrated (on Twitter @HI_mag) magazine (May 14) read “HORSE HUMOR: Thoughts for an ex-hunter transitioning to the jumper ring http://bit.ly/1cAApbb.”   The fun article is posted at HorseChannel.com, from May 13, 2015, and is entitled “An Open Letter to A New Ex-Hunter” and goes on to say “Follow one rider’s harrowing journey from the comfort of the hunter ring to the thrill of the jumpers by Emily Bogenschutz” (on Twitter @EJBog).   It is a highly creative article written by “Your Future” and I enjoyed reading it.  After reading it you will have to let me know if you believe it’s written to the horse or to the rider.

There you have it – our first blog post here in celebration of horses!  As we close out our time together today I would like us to take a few minutes and recall if there was an occasion or if we still do have horses in our lives – and let’s make the time to write at least one letter about it.   I’ll be printing off today’s post to send to my girlfriend who just realized  her dream.  Here’s to each of our dreams being pursued successfully too!
